FINDINGS BASED ON PUBLIC ISSUE’S MARCH 2009 ECONOMIC BAROMETER

Greeks continue to see consumer opportunities

  • Somewhat paradoxically, consumer sentiment appeared to approve in March. Despite the ongoing economic crisis, the relevant index stood at slightly higher levels relative to March 2008.
  • What is notable is the fact that compared to last year, consumers appeared to assess present economic conditions as being clearly more positive. At the same time, expectations regarding the course of the economy and of employment over the next 12 months were more optimistic relative to March 2008.
  • Despite the crisis conditions, the propensity to purchase and consume rose by 5.1 points to reach its highest value to date.
  • The making of postponed purchases, efforts by consumers to maintain their lifestyle, the reduction of inflation, the qualitative transformation of consumer habits, as well as various psycho-social aspects of consumption (reaction to the crisis) appear to have helped keep propensity to purchase and consume at particularly high levels.
  • Expectations regarding the course of the economy over the next 5 years showed an impressive rise. For the first time the relevant index surpassed 100, indicating either greater confidence in the ability of the Greek economy to cope with the economic crisis in the long term, or excessive optimism.
  • In contrast, expectations regarding the economy and unemployment remained at very low levels, despite a slight improvement in the current month.
  • Expectations of savings improved slightly. The course of the relevant index appears to confirm the fact that the ability of consumers to save is linked to the prospects for an increase in their personal income.
  • Consumers’ expectations regarding income improved marginally, but nevertheless remained at quite low levels relative to other Economic Barometer indices.
  • Public Issue’s Consumer Confidence Indicator (CCI) and the University of Michigan’s Index of Consumer Sentiment ( ICS) for the sixth month continued to follow a parallel course.
