Findings based on Public Issue’s February 2009 Economic Barometer

Marked deterioration in consumer confidence

  • The Consumer Confidence Index declined significantly in February, relative to the previous month.
  • With the exception of inflation expectations, all Economic Barometer indices showed a downward trend.
  • Expectations for the economy deteriorated considerably, with the relevant index falling to its lowest value ever. This development comes amidst a general climate of uncertainty about the capacity to tackle the crisis, particularly in view of the country’s fiscal problems.
  • Despite a relatively slight decline in February, propensity to purchase and consume stood at higher levels compared to the corresponding month of 2008.
  • The index of expectations for unemployment registered a sharp deterioration. The downward plunge of the index set a new negative record.
  • Despite a massive drop in inflation and the reduction of housing loan instalments, expectations regarding personal income weakened significantly, deteriorating not only relative to the previous month but also relative to February 2008. This deterioration in income expectations was most apparent among the unemployed and pensioners.
  • Expectations regarding the course of the economy over the next 5 years weakened, for the second consecutive month. It appears that consumers are gradually realising that the way out of the crisis, as well as the reduction of the public debt and deficits, will be a long-term process.
  • Expectations regarding savings also weakened considerably. The changes in the index in recent months appear to suggest a lower capacity to save on the part of Greek households.
